Canberra's Carillon

Canberra's Carillon, located on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin, was a gift to the people of Australia from the British Government to commemorate our National Capital's 50th anniversary. It was officially "opened" by Her Majesty the Queen in April, 1970.

This shot was taken in 1970 and shows a relatively barren surrounding landscape (from a residential viewpoint).

(A Carillon is a bell tower which must have a minimum of 23 bells to be considered a Carillon.  This one holds 55 cup-shaped bells, each one weighing between 7 kilograms and 6 tonnes and the bells span 4.5 octaves chromatically) Thank you Wikipedia!

I shall be returning to Canberra for a holiday soon and look forward to hearing the delightful tones of the Carillon.  Meanwhile, I am liking up with James' fabulous Weekend Reflections

Blast from the past!

(This photo was taken around 1966 when I was still a teenager, living in Canberra on a
temporary transfer with my employment).

Antiques & Memorabilia

A visit to some of Strathalbyn's antique & memorabilia shops
was a given during our recent visit there!

.... couldn't resist this framed poster!

... nor these old cameras (not a Hasselblad or Voigtlander to be seen!)

and while I greatly enjoy ironing, don't think I'd be saying that
if I had to use these!

I wonder how many sales this machine recorded

.... and who could forget James Dean, the Hollywood actor who
died in a car crash at the tender age of 24?
or the essential Elvis?

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead and

London House

Weekend Reflections

This was the reflection through the window of one of the many Antique shops
to be found in the popular country town of Strathalbyn.
(The streets will be much more "alive" this weekend, as the town hosts
an annual antiques and craft fair!)

A ribboned Sunrise

I was fascinated by this white "ribbon" of light just above the landscape
as dawn broke just after 7 a.m. a few weeks ago.

Afternoon delight

Returning from a day's outing to Strathalbyn with a good friend
we were delighted to come across this section of the Angus River on our way to Macclesfield.

The sky was blue, the sun shining, river running, birds singing in the trees
and the rich green pastures showing evidence of recent good rains. What a great start to the week!

A gift

Last Christmas I was given a Phaleanopsis Orchid plant bearing several gorgeous blooms. Since my green thumbs are more a shade of yellow, I feared for its survival!
However, it seems to have thrived in the warm, light & sunny location
of my bay window and this is the first of its ten (!) buds
that opened a few days ago - I'm ecstatic!
