Such history!

Following are some images taken in one of many churches visited during my 6-week return to the UK in 2009. This particular church was Anglican and located in Kent, south England.  Above the archway leading to the altar is a dome-shaped inscription which is enlarged below.

Although appearing dim here, I am hopeful
that, when clicked on an enlarged, you will be able to reasonably clearly make out the wording as appeared in the original photo.

This artwork was created in 1688 and spells out the Ten Commandments.

On the left is a gravestone in the floor of the church. I was captivated by the language of those days.  (You will find it easier to understand if you substitute an "s" where you see what appears to be an "f").
.... and on the right are two Celtic headstones in the graveyard outside.

Morning has broken . . .

Another shot from the Henley Jetty taken on the last day of 2011.
The morning was delightfully fresh without being chilly at 5:30am, but once the sun
made it's presence felt, the temperature quickly rose into the 30's (C).

Rural, rustic rambling . . .

A pleasant, carefree Sunday afternoon's drive through the beautiful Adelaide hills revealed this rusty outbuilding adjacent to a lush vineyard close to Gumeracha, and we just couldn't drive past it!

Although the weather was very ominous at the start of our journey, the rain cleared, the clouds blew away and it turned out quite warm and our drive took us further than initially expected, but brought some interesting photographic opportunities along the way.

High Tea or a Picnic?

This view is of the outdoor dining area of the Topiary Cafe at Newman's Nursery in Tea Tree Gully - a delightful venue for a beautifully decorated and delectable High Tea: just perfect for that special occasion at any time of the year.  (They also have an indoor dining area where your eyes can feast upon wonderful displays of delicate china, napery, wall tapestries and the unusual).  And what the passionate owners and staff don't know about any form of gardening, would fit on a postage stamp!  A visit is highly recommended.

By contrast, here we have a family enjoying a picnic lunch on the banks of the River Torrens in Adelaide's CBD, adjacent to the University of Adelaide grounds, with the ducks, swans, pigeons and seagulls all wanting a piece of the action!

On the outside looking in, looking out

Looking into the windows of a restaurant on the banks of the River Torrens - sadly the restaurant was closed, so we couldn't indulge in our almost obligatory cappucino! But it was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the walk anyway (that was probably better for our figures!!).

What traffic problems.... ??!

The view above is a rare sight - an almost-deserted Port Wakefield Road: being THE main corridor from South Australia's north and outback regions through to Adelaide City, traffic (especially heavy commercial semi-trailers) is generally very heavy along this route.

Something's fishy here . . . !

These fish (Bream, I think) had just come in on the morning's high tide, into West Lakes where a group of keen fishermen were waiting.  West Lakes is man-made and is used for sailing and rowing (the revered King's Cup is battled out by oarsmen on this lake) - no motor boats are permitted except for a sizeable but relatively quiet tourist launch. On the incoming tide some underwater gates are opened to allow the seawater (and fish) in. On the outgoing tide, gates at the other end of the lake are opened to allow the water to flow into the Port River.  After a problem with algae bloom threatening to spoil this attractive and popular spot some years ago, it is encouraging to see things are "back on track" and the fish are thriving.

Joy-giving blossoms

As another exciting year begins, I decided on the images above because new blossoms invariably bring joy to the heart and lift the spirits.  Hoping they have this effect on you!

Happy New Year to all !

Whether you are on land or at sea, and whatever path you choose to take as this year commences, may you enjoy good health, a balance of challenges and successes, the love of good friends and family, humility, compassion, a heart for helping others and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for all that God brings into your life (especially His creation which provides us with a constant supply of awesome photographic opportunities!).
