Barwon River

The beautiful Barwon River in Geelong, providing a peaceful environment for walkers, runners, kayakers and rowers. The riverside pathways are wonderfully shady too - much appreciated on hot days when walking the dog!

The Heavens Declare . . .

Returning home from the garden centre earlier this week, mid-afternoon, I just had to pull the car over to capture this shot of the sun bursting through this bunch of clouds. (Taken with my Samsung Galaxy smartphone, it being too hot to bring out my Nikon!).

Red sky at night . . .

This was the fiery sunset from a friend's property at Springton in South Australia's Barossa Valley a few weeks ago, after a rather hot day. (Thankfully it was not a fire, despite giving every appearance of one!)

A thundery finish

Soon after these shots were taken at dusk earlier this week, we had a VERY loud thunderstorm but precious little rain.  The sky was so fiery, it was as if a bushfire had got out of control - thankfully that wasn't the case!

Not a bushfire

This shot of a "fiery" sunset was taken back in June (Australia's first month of Winter), but today it reminds me that we are now only weeks away from our official Bushfire Season. Residents in the Port Lincoln region on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula have just this week experienced a devastating loss of homes to such an event. Thoughts and prayers are with those coming to terms with their loss and wondering how to once again rebuild their homes and lives.

Storm approaching

One of the ovals on which I take Jessie for a run - on that day a thunderstorm was brewing so just snapped this with the camera feature on my smartphone.

At sea or on land....

Whether captured at sea or on land, sunsets never fail to impress me.
Here we have contrasts in location, colours and atmosphere (as in mood)

Just salt?

These are mountains of naturally-evaporated sea salt and are part of the Cheetham Salt Fields north of Adelaide and adjacent to St Vincent's Gulf.
I'd not really thought much about salt previously, but a little research reveals that it is used for supressing dust (being sprayed on in liquid form), as an essential part of stockfeed, as a method of curing hides and skins from spoilage prior to the remaining tanning process, as a vital ingredient in the pharmaceutical industry (whether used in preparation of dialysis solutions, cosmetics or health products), as swimming pool additive, as well as being used in the food industry and consumed by us locally as well as being exported overseas.
The salt you see above is double washed, dried, sieved and graded (to give consistent particle sizes) before it ends up in our pantries.

Here you can see the "fields" of salt water prior to evaporation

Feeling "in the Pink"

Looking across Mawson Lake, past Technology Park, towards the Adelaide Hills (Mt Lofty Ranges) on sunset earlier this week.

Having "two bites at the cherry" this week! (i.e. contributing 2 entries to Skywatch)

Canola

Returning from a great day's outing at Mintaro, couldn't resist pulling over to take this shot with the mobile phone (being a bit pushed for time to set up with "the real" camera!)

A fiery finish

This was taken mid-Winter, at around 5pm and the sun appeared to have "exploded" on the horizon at this point.

Decisions, decisions!

Couldn't decide which of these to post this week, so opted for a collage!
These were taken late afternoon/early evening from the local oval where Jessie has her exercise.  Happy weekend to all.

Out of the blue

On another recent trip into rural South Australia, still in Winter - would you believe? - we were treated with glorious blue skies and, although the air was crisp, the sun still made its presence felt (much to our comfort & delight!).

Caught on the hop !

As I was leaving a friend's home the other afternoon, we suddenly spotted this double rainbow from her carport area.  Not having my camera with me (shame, shame!!), I quickly took these shots with my mobile phone.  Sorry I've not yet perfected the art of (nor had the time to try recently) stitching these shots together, which might have produced a more effective result.

As the saying goes:  "Behind every cloud there's a silver lining" - er, in this instance, substitute "gold" for silver!

Happy skywatch weekend to all.
