Lunar eclipse

Last Saturday night revealed the shortest lunar eclipse this century and our night skies displayed an astonishing "blood moon".  This astronomical event occurs when the sun, moon and Earth align, and the moon's colour is a result of sunlight scattering off Earth's atmosphere.

Despite clouds drifting by, I managed to capture these images.

. . . and the following shots were taken during my 20 minute observations

There will not be another total lunar eclipse (visible from earth) until 2018.

amazing shots Valerie. It was great to see wasn't it? I got some shots too over here in WA despite the drifting clouds.

stunning shots of the eclipse. I could not see it as it was raining where I live :(

So glad you managed to get some shots Valerie, Heavy cloud prevented me seeing it. I was all set up with the camera and tripod but there was not even a gap to see the moon.

The colours in that first moon shot are very spectacular. We had our own eclipse recently but with lots of cloud it was something of a disappointment following all the hype.

You captured it beautifully! I managed to miss it altogether.

Great photos and really great that your skies were clear enough to see it well. We had light overcast - enough to see where the moon was but clear enough to see more.
Sorry I am late replying to you - a big storm yesterday knocked out my net connection - and then I lost the phone while the technicians fixed everything this morning.

Great shots - I was able to watch the first part - but never got the blood Moon shots - too much cloud.
